Canopy Nepal Scholarship Programs is an educational scholarship program that ensures educational accessibility to the students from the underprivileged backgrounds by fulfilling their basic necessities as well as providing them support in covering for their tuition, uniforms, stationery supplies, tiffin expenses, healthy meals, accommodation and monthly allowances. Along with the support in formal education, the program supports diligent students to pursue technical and vocational training in order to prepare them into independent individuals. Furthermore, the program also includes skill enhancement through various workshops, training, counseling and mentorship to empower the students and enable them for a competitive work environment of tomorrow.

The target group are any individuals who come from underprivileged backgrounds with no or minimal financial means to continue education. The program gives a particular emphasis on female scholars, differently abled youths,  orphans and children from single parents.

  • Educational Scholarship

The scholarship program largely focuses on ensuring the students, who are enthused in learning but are not being able to afford it, are in the path of acquiring quality education by providing all essential educational necessities, which includes admission and tuitions fees, extra coachings, school supplies such as books, stationeries, and uniforms. Through the provision of these school supplies and bearing of all the costs related to their schools, the program attempts to encourage the scholars to remain motivated to excel in their studies without having to worry about fees and educational resources. This is also intended to minimize the dropout rate of the students who come from families with limited or no financial means.

  • Healthy School Meal

In order to ensure the better performance of the scholars, better health status, and thereby improved confidence among scholars, the program ensures the provision of healthy meals to the scholars. The Healthy School Meal initiative has helped strengthen child nutrition and literacy of the scholars. The other purpose of Healthy School Meals is to address the high absenteeism rate of students in public schools

  • Technical and Vocational Trainings

Along with supporting students willing to continue formal education, the program supports students to enroll and study in technical and vocational education. The program provides deserving students scholarships to receive barista, cooking, and other short term training courses to increase their job prospects, meanwhile also supporting individuals from underprivileged backgrounds in Nursing, Fashion Design, IT, and other diploma level courses. In collaboration with partner organizations and individuals, the programs even create internship and job opportunities for deserving students after the completion of technical and vocational training.

  • Overall Wellbeing 

The program has a particular emphasis on the overall physical and mental wellbeing of the scholars. Status of scholars in school and home is regularly assessed through regular meetups with scholars, parents, and teachers including school, home, and hostel visits. This helps the team gain the insight and the support required to the scholar. Apart from this, the scholars and parents are provided with psychosocial support upon necessity which helps them boost their confidence towards solving their problems, which has been hampering their studies. The program focuses on various skill development workshops and training to ensure the growth of scholars and to enable them to grow into independent individuals. All the workshops and training sessions are designed in a way that would enhance the transferable skills of the scholars, and develop their critical thinking, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities, while also ensuring their awareness on different issues existing in the society.

  • Collaboration with Institutions

The program emphasis on building a strong collaboration with schools and colleges for the continued success of the program. This is done through regular meetups with the teachers and respective administration throughout the year. The programs involve the institutions in the scholar selection process to recommend potential scholars for the scholarship. A representative is appointed at each partner institution who acts as a mediator between the program and institution to monitor and evaluate scholars’ academic performance and overall behavior throughout the scholarship.

  • Additional Support

Apart from the aforementioned focus areas, the scholarship programs provide additional support to its scholars on a case by case basis.  The team provides health screening and medical assistance to scholars in case of emergency. In case of major health issues, Canopy Nepal tries to secure assistance from medical professionals or other organizations to aid in the treatment of the scholar and/or family member. There are also frequent Health Camps, vaccination campaigns organized by Canopy Nepal in collaboration with organizations and health institutions targeting a particular school or community. Besides, in case of any emergency, the scholarship programs provide emergency support in the form of food supplies, sanitary products, rental support, etc. to scholars’ families and minority groups.

In order to be a part of the scholarship program, the potential scholars must meet the following criteria:

  • Academic Status

The academic status of the scholars is given prime emphasis while selecting scholars. In this context, although the performance of the potential scholar is given high emphasis, their interest in learning is given equal importance. The regularity of the scholar and the academic performance is assessed along with their commitment towards gaining their education.

  • Economic Status

The economic status of the scholar is another integral consideration made by the scholarship program during the selection process. In this process, the financial background of the parents/guardians of the scholars are considered which can be a greater factor for the possible factor of the dropout of the scholar.

  • Support from Family and School Administration

The support shown by the family and the school administration is an essential component leading to the academic success and overall well being of the scholar. Therefore, the support provided by the family towards the betterment of a student and the persistence shown by the school administration to help the student and the scholarship program is an important aspect considered during scholar selection.

  • Disadvantaged Groups

The scholarship program gives special priority to students from Socially and ethnically marginalized groups during the scholar selection process. Disadvantaged groups prioritized by the program for scholarships include Dalits, differently-abled students and female students. Scholars belonging to these groups and fulfilling other criteria are emphasized for the scholarship.

A month before the commencement of every academic year, we select new scholars for the new academic session. The scholarship selection team with the support of partner schools receives potential scholarship applications, shortlists them as per the selection criteria and the final selection is done after conducting a series of interviews with potential scholars, teachers, parents and is followed by home visits. Only the deserving students fulfilling all the criteria of scholarship are selected as scholars.

  • Educational Scholarship

Throughout the year, the program supports its scholars through educational scholarship. Payments of tuition fees and other academic fees charged by the schools, providing school supplies, uniforms, stationeries, and any other essential educational requirements are done as per the necessity.

  • Overall Social Wellbeing Assessment

With the regular visits of the school and consultation with scholars, parents, and teachers, the team assesses the overall social wellbeing of the scholars in a regular manner. These assessments provide insights to the team about each of the scholars’ academic status, their health status, psychosocial status, school life, and their home life. 

  • Healthy  Meals Program

Our scholars get healthy meals in their schools as a part of the Healthy Meals Program that ensures their better nutritional status and thereby contributes to their better health thus enhancing their academic achievements. The program is also incorporated in order to maintain good attendance of scholars.

  • Health Checkups and Emergency Medical Support

In case of necessity, we conduct health checkups of scholars facing health issues and provide possible assistance to the scholar.  Similarly, scholars are taken care of by the program in case of any medical emergency. The team regularly assesses the health conditions of all scholars in the program. On occasions, the program organizes health camps in collaboration with like-minded organizations and health professionals.

  • Periodic Meetings with the Parents

In order to know about the home life of the scholars, understand the role of the parents for the development of the scholars along with the assessment of needs and expectations of the parents, meetings with parents are held in a quarterly manner. This has helped the parents take ownership of the project and thereby provide scholars with the required guidance.

  • Field Volunteer (FV) and School Liaison Officer (SLO)

To engage youths interested in contributing to the field of education, the scholarship program provides volunteering opportunities to high school and college students as FVs and SLOs. These aspiring young leaders serve as positive role models for the scholars and also learn to grow themselves as responsible leaders through multifarious training and field exposures.  

  • Skill-based Workshops

Addressing the need of the 21st century and helping scholars gain different skills that they will require in their life, different skill-based workshops are introduced looking at the requirement of the scholars. The workshops are designed in a way that would enhance the transferable skills of the scholars, and develop their critical thinking, negotiation, and problem-solving abilities, while also ensuring their awareness on different issues existing in the society.

The scholarship program provides scholars with the flexibility to continue their education through vocational training and/or classes so that they can be prepared for their upcoming higher studies or for job opportunities. Our scholars have been enrolled in vocational classes with a motive to make them confident enough to pursue their goals.
